Ο Θωμάς Σπύρου έχει πτυχίο Φυσικού Τμήματος Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (1987) και διδακτορικό στο τμήμα Μαθηματικών του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου (1999). Έχει μεγάλη επαγγελματική εμπειρία σε ανάλυση σχεδίαση και υλοποίηση πληροφοριακών συστημάτων ως ελεύθερος επαγγελματίας πριν την εκλογή του στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου το 2000.

Διδάσκει σε προπτυχιακό και μεταπτυχιακό επίπεδο μαθήματα του ευρύτερου χώρου της Σχεδίασης Πολύπλοκων Συστημάτων με κύριο χαρακτηριστικό την Ανθρώπινη Αλληλεπίδραση, με χρήση Πληροφορικής και Σύγχρονης Τεχνολογίας και με βάση σύγχρονες διεπιστημονικές και συστημικές θεωρίες και μεθοδολογίες. Έχει διδάξει επίσης στο τμήμα Μαθηματικών και στο τμήμα Μηχανικών Πληροφοριακών και Επικοινωνιακών Συστημάτων. Διετέλεσε μέρος της επιτροπής ανάπτυξης τόσο του τμήματος Μηχανικών Πληροφοριακών και Επικοινωνιακών Συστημάτων όσο και του Τμήματος Μηχανικών Σχεδίασης Προϊόντων και Συστημάτων.

Έχει επιβλέψει μεγάλο αριθμό διπλωματικών εργασιών και έχει υποστηρίξει Διδακτορικές Διατριβές.

Έχει δημοσιεύσει πάνω από 80 εργασίες σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά, συνέδρια και κεφάλαια βιβλίων και περισσότερες από 700 αναφορές.

Έχει σχεδιάσει και αναπτύξει Συστήματα και Πληροφοριακά Συστήματα τα οποία βρίσκονται σε πλήρη λειτουργία μετά από αρκετά χρόνια λειτουργίας.

Τα Ερευνητικά Ενδιαφέροντά του περιλαμβάνουν Σχεδίαση Συστημάτων (Systems Design), Συστημική θεωρία και σκέψη (Systems Thinking), Σχεδίαση Υπηρεσιών (Service Design), Συστήματα Υποστήριξης Αποφάσεων στο Design (Decision Support Systems), Σχεδίαση Πληροφοριακών Συστημάτων (Information Systems Design), Προσομοίωση (Simulation), Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη (Artificial Intelligence).
