Ο Σπύρος Μποφυλάτος κατέχει διδακτορικό από το Τμήμα Μηχανικών Σχεδίασης Προϊόντων και Συστημάτων της Πολυτεχνικής σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου. Η έρευνά του εκτείνεται γύρω από τη σχεδίαση για αειφορία, το σχεδιασμό υπηρεσιών και την κοινωνική καινοτομία. Το ερευνητικό του έργο του βασίζεται στη δημιουργία διαλόγου μεταξύ του θεωρητικού πλαισίου και των κοινωνικοτεχνικών τεχνουργημάτων που ενσωματώνουν διαφορετικά ερευνητικά ερωτήματα και αξιακά συστήματα. Στον πυρήνα αυτής της διαδικασίας βρίσκεται η ιδέα ότι ζούμε σε καιρούς μετάβασής και την παραγωγή λόγου που οδηγεί σε νέα δίκτυα αντικειμένων-ανθρώπων που ενσωματώνουν εναλλακτικά συστήματα αξιών, είναι απαραίτητη για να απομακρυνθούμε από τη σημερινή μη βιώσιμη κοινωνία.
