Type: Compulsory (C)
Semester: 02 (Spring)
Hours: 2 hours lab

The work in this Studio develops on a theoretical and practical level and concerns the continuous
practice of drawing for design. It aims to reinforce the basic rules of free-hand Drawing (Studio
1B - Winter semester) through multiple exercises and the deepening of "how we see" and "how
we react to what we see, with drawing".

Pattern and rhythm define structure, local color, tone, and relationships of object to space are
the foundations upon which, along with practice, the ability to create complex and detailed
designs using analog and digital media is achieved. An introduction is made to the use of digital
drawing media, such as animation, which involve the movement of the drawing in time (4th
dimension).

The aim is to synthesize methods and means of representation within a cooperative group
environment, as to create a multitude of conceptual design drawings and in turn to develop those

  • Sketches of Sedan and Prototype Cars from observation, Concept Car Sketch & Surface Design
  • Drawing of Interior Spaces, room with furniture, classrooms, various furniture from observation
  • Drawings of men's & women's wristwatches, drawing from photographic prototypes of watches
  • Drawing of multiple buildings & outdoor spaces using 2 vanishing point perspective (2 VPP)
  • Drawing of buildings, interior, and courtyard spaces – 1 vanishing point perspective (1 VPP)
  • Motorcycle drawing from observation Vespa & street bike - engine, wheels, viewing angle 45°
  • Drawing of bike from observation & mechanical details from multiple side views
  • Drawing of a human Hand from observation in various positions regarding range of motion and hand grips such as handles of handheld devices and objects.
  • Observation drawing from compositions of geometric solids, linear perspective, multiple complex geometric solids.
  • Drawing of everyday objects in different scales such as mugs, mobiles - tabletop design objects using color.
  • The Theory of Applying Linear Perspective Rules -Vanishing Points 1, 2 & 3 - application of linear perspective using computer programs.
  • Created from multiple drawings animation – stop motion analysis

The course is based on the development and continuous skill enrichment on the theoretical ground for ideation drawing and the practice-based cultivation of analog and computer-based Drawing for Design. The course aims to consolidate basic rules and the practice of Free Hand Drawing. Having practiced the basic technical issues of drawing by observation, (Studio 1B- Freehand Drawing), such as proportions, perspective, tone, form, and composition, and have applied these to drawing from actual- physical prototypes and having sharpened their visual perception by analyzing a variety of visual elements with the ability to perceive, estimate and render these visual elements, students continue to improve and further develop drawing skills with the ultimate goal of using sketching modalities for communication and expression within designteams.

In this course, students gain further knowledge of the broader rules of analog drawing for design, in various mediums related to structure, rhythm, contour, color, and associations of forms in nature, the constructed object and the environment. Through analyzing and applying theoretical rules and concepts in their daily practice of drawing, students can identify and use visual elements, and emotional responses from the environment to conceptualize images within the drawing language to create both individual and collaborative drawings and compositions using various materials and techniques. They can produce results in both two and three dimensions as well as time-based projects, using traditional and mixed-media techniques of drawing, designcollage, model-construction, and animation.

Students in Studio-2B will collaborate in context research for the development of ideation drawings on design parameters within a team environment. Using critical, analytical, and exploratory thinking, they allow these drawings to be transformed through the design ideation processes and can manipulate and adapt them to match design specifications while continuously making decisions about their development. The course aims at providing general skills in drawing techniques and in rendering by hand-drawing and by computer- of three-dimensional volumes, structures of geometric solids, objects of small- or large-scale, objects in perspective, architectural compositions of interior or exterior spaces in perspective, complex organic forms, with a variety of line quality, tone, and color. Emphasis is placed on using “designed” and “industrially produced” items as well as naturally occurring objects as models from where students ground their drawing practice and draw inspiration

Upon completion of their study in this course students will be able to analyze and sketch with relative speed and accuracy real or imaginary three-dimensional objects and spaces as well as to reproduce these images using electronic drawing mediums and programs

At the conclusion of the semester, students will be familiar with basic Photoshop techniques for drawing and painting and will be able to utilize this material in expressive drawing-animationprojects. A printed and electronic presentation of all works produced in class or outside of class in the form of assignments, is required to be submitted for final evaluation.
