In this introductory course history of design is examined as a topic closely related to cultural history. Through a survey of the major periods of European culture, emphasis is placed on analysis of selected works of material culture or applied arts. Students are addressing to the following questions: what is the social, political context of these works, their public, to what needs are they responding.

-

Through a diachronic survey of various cultures based upon a selection of works of material culture and applied arts, students acquire knowledge and skills in design and its respective historical contexts. They are trained to understand the multiple levels of meaning of these works and gradually interpret them as complex cultural phenomena. Studding stylistic trends of the past and aesthetic ideals of different cultures contributes in shaping their perception of visual arts, which may provide future designers with the adequate background and sources for inspiration.
