This course deals with technological and theoretical aspects of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and the application of them in product design and system development. It includes theoretical lectures (3h/week) and laboratory lectures (2h/week). 

  • Introduction to the computer aided design/manufacture/engineer programs and platforms (Computer-Aided Design/Engineering/Manufacturing – CAD/CAE/CAM).
  • Basic mathematical models that are employed by current CAD systems for the 3D geometric modeling: fundamental description of curves and solids, projections and transformations.
  • Design exercises and methodologies using commercial and academic CAD platforms.

Theoretical lectures aim at:

  • Learning the mathematical / geometrical models that form the basis of modern CAD systems.
  • The understanding of how geometrical/mathematical models apply to the computer - aided design process.
  • A deep learning of CAD theoretical aspects, in order for the student to be able to solve design problems on the basis of any modern CAD system.

 

The aims of laboratory lectures are, through laboratory tutorials, the students to:

  • Learn basic methodologies for the geometric modeling of 2D and 3D models and to understand the currently developed tools for the design and modification of solid models.  
  • Practically understand the application of the mathematical models in every day computer aided design systems.
