Hours: 3 hours lecture

Additive Manufacturing is a generic field that is related to the previously used term of Rapid Prototyping. The course introduces the students to the reverse engineering and additive manufacturing technologies. It includes theoretical lectures and lab projects. Lab projects focus on the steps from physical object to physical prototype.

The course is evaluated through three projects:

  • Project Α: 30% (research project)
  • Project Β: 30% (research project)
  • Project Γ: 40% (lab project)

The course introduces the students to the reverse engineering and additive manufacturing technologies. It includes both theoretical lectures and laboratory exercises. The subjects of the course are:

  • Introduction and basic principles of reverse engineering and additive manufacturing.
  • Applications of additive manufacturing and reverse engineering.
  • Additive Manufacturing Processes
  • Software issues of additive manufacturing
  • Methodology to design for additive manufacturing
  • Laboratory exercises using current technologies of reverse engineering and additive manufacturing on the base of a semester project.

The aims of the course are the students to:

  • Become acquainted with the modern technologies of reverse engineering and additive manufacturing for modeling and prototyping of industrial products.
  • Study the literature of current reverse engineering and additive manufacturing research works.
  • Learn the integrated design cycle of a product, from the modeling phase to the manufacturing of a working prototype.
  • Develop their skills on how to solve design problems using reverse engineering and additive manufacturing tools.
